What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, originating from the emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, is celebrated nationwide as a day of freedom, with cookouts and community events highlighting Black culture. Boise, Idaho, began city-wide celebrations in the 1990s, evolving into larger events organized by groups like The Black Liberation Collective. In 2021, Juneteenth was federally recognized as a holiday, and Juneteenth Idaho, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was formed to support celebrations and empower Black artists and organizers in Idaho and the Inland Northwest.
